Badlands Vs. Goodlands A Perspective Shift.

Who says what is good and what is bad? Our ego, the conscious mind? Others? Society? Or maybe the subconscious tells us so.

Good and Bad is an example of dualistic thinking and when we subscribe to dualism, we have to, we must label…EVERYTHING. And, it is subconscious.

I am Valerie the Hypnotic Hiker. As a hypnotist and hiker I have realized how much the two have in common for helping to shift perspective and gain insights. And if you are spiritual how nature connects you to your source. In July of 2020 my partner and I traveled to South Dakota for some long hikes. It was our second day in the state and Badlands National Park was on the agenda.

As we drove in, it was clear to see it was a place of extremes. We learned that is was once a swamp. Barculite, turtle and alligator fossils have been found there. It was once a lush environment, so the Badlands, in the distant past, were not as bad.

Blessed Are The Poor In Spirit

This is one of the Beatitudes that Jesus taught from the infamous Mount. And because I read Emmet Fox‘s interpretation in The Sermon on the Mount, I know that what it means is to be emptied of our present way of thought. ‘Poor in Spirit’ means to “be willing to set aside your present habits of thought, your present views and prejudices, your present way of life if necessary…”

Paleontologist Thaddeus Culbertson said this about Badlands: “Fancy yourself on the hottest day in the summer (it was 93 degrees the day we were there) in the hottest spot of such a place without water–without an animal and scarce an insect astir –without a single flower to speak pleasant things to you and you will have some idea of the utter loneliness of the Bad Lands.”

If you come to The Badlands with the expectation that it will live up to its name, then you close your mind to other possibilities. “Empty yourself of preconceived ideas,” and open up to new wonders,” Fox writes.

Where in your life do you hold a fixed meaning to something, an event or someone? This idea becomes a subconscious response and it is difficult to rid your self of it.

Subconscious fixation vs conscious desire

When you are ready to drop old ideas, to empty yourself of your present thinking you have to understand the workings of the subconscious mind. What it does is stay on course, so whether your thought is positive or negative it will continue to stay on that course. It takes a deeply emotional event to startle the brain and allow something else to slip in. Or you can do hypnosis. That might be more relaxing.

When the conscious thought and the subconscious desire line up you get magic. Ease. Effortlessness. Prosperity. Hypnosis is a trance-like state wherein you can discover the root of your issue or problem and make magical transformations.

Not so bad at Badlands.
